Getting through Cancun Airport
Arriving at a foreign airport can be quite nerve wracking, especially if you don’t speak the local language. Here are our tips on how to navigate Cancun Airport for the smoothest experience.
Cancun International Airport is the busiest Airport in Latin America and the Caribbean, in 2016 it processed over 20 million passengers! So as you can imagine, it can get quite hectic.
On the Plane
We recommend you pack in your hand luggage a pen, the airline will or should should provide you with 2 forms, one is for immigration and the other is for customs. Both forms are in English and Spanish, they are self explanatory. If you make a mistake, just ask the flying attendant for another one.
Arrival at Cancun airport
Cancun airport has three terminals. Terminal 1 is for company shipments and cargo. Terminal 2 is for domestic and international flights. And terminal 3 is international flights only.
Once you disembark the plane, you will see signs that will lead you to Immigration. During peek seasons there are also agents giving directions.
Lines can be very busy, bathrooms are available in this area., stay positive and have your Passport and forms ready!
The immigration agent will scan your Passport and stamp it. The part the agents hands you back is the “Tourist Card” which you will have to give back when you leave Mexico – keep it safe! If you lose it you will have to pay for a new one. The process of replacing a lost tourist card can take awhile so arrive at the airport in plenty of time. There is an Immigration counter/office in both Terminal 2 and 3 to help.
The baggage claim is normally swift unless your flight is coming from Central and South America. You will see customs dogs searching the bags over and over again looking for illegal contraband, you just have to be patient at this point.
Nearly there! This is were you hand the second form to the customs agents. All your luggage then goes through a scanner, after that the agent will ask you to push a button. If you get the green light, you’re home free but if you get the red one, your luggage will go under another inspection. Remember, this is just a random procedure.
If you are unlucky and get stopped for this second inspection you will be asked to open your luggage and the inspector will search through it. Remember they are only looking for illegal items. This is a routine inspection and it should take no more than 10 minutes.
Before you reach the the final exit, you will pass many “Tours and Tourist Information”,desks, do not stop, they are Timeshare reps. So unless you want to spend hours of your vacation on a sales pitch, just say no gracias and proceed to the exit.
Outside the airport
Get ready for the tropical weather, hot and humid but still a paradise! Make sure you have light and comfortable clothes. Remember Cancun’s weather averages around 80°F.
Buses and taxis are well sign posted.
If you have booked a private transfer you will find a greeter waiving a sign with your name or the name of the transfer company, introduce yourself and they will call your driver and you’ll quickly be on your way to your resort and your well deserved vacations!
If you do not have transportation included, we recommend you book your transportation in advance to avoid the waiting and the crowds.
Have a great vacation in the Yucatán Peninsula.
