This event revives one of the most important Mayan traditions. It takes place between May 25/26 and encompasses rituals, dances and music that the Mayan offer to the Goddess IxChel.
The festival is a multi-day reenactment of the ancient pilgrimage made by the Mayan people from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel, a 36-mile journey made in hand-carved canoes, which they undertook to consult the oracle of Ix Chel, the goddess of fertility.
The voyage is done in traditional Mayan canoes starting in Polé, today Xcaret, towards the Island of Cozumel where an atmosphere of festivity is waiting for them in the Chankanaab Park, once there, the first victory is accomplished.
The journey will resume the next morning, when at 8:30 a.m. they must set sail and return to Xcaret to bring the message of Ixchel, where the welcome celebration is even more uplifting.
